Braid Hairstyle Ideas

Ever look at someone’s hair and think, how do they have time for that? I used to. Turns out, most of those fancy braids aren’t complicated at all. Once you get the hang of a few basic moves, you can make your hair look like you spent half the morning styling it. You really don’t need much—just a brush, a few elastics, maybe a bit of patience. These are the braids I keep going back to when I want to look put together without the effort.

1. The Classic French Braid

The Classic French Braid

Start with smooth hair. Brush it out so there aren’t any tangles. Take a section from the top of your head and split it into three even parts. Cross the right over the middle, then the left over the new middle. Keep adding little bits of hair from the sides each time you cross. Keep going until you reach the ends, then tie it.

When you’re done, pull on the edges just a little. It makes the braid look fuller, softer, less perfect—in a good way.

2. Dutch Braid

Dutch Braid

This one’s just a French braid flipped inside out. Part your hair down the middle and pick one side. Split the top section into three, but instead of crossing over, go under the middle strand each time. Add in small pieces of hair as you move down. You can braid both sides or just one if you like the asymmetric look.

If your hair’s super smooth, work in a bit of styling cream first. It grips better that way and the braid won’t slip apart.

3. Fishtail Braid

Fishtail Braid

Gather your hair into a low ponytail. Divide it into two halves. From the outer edge of the left section, take a small piece and cross it to the right. Then do the same on the other side. Keep repeating this all the way down. Tie it when you’re done, then carefully cut out the elastic at the top so it looks seamless.

Don’t try to make it perfect. A fishtail looks best when it’s a little loose and uneven.

4. Rope Braid Ponytail

Pull your hair into a high ponytail and split it in two. Twist both sections in the same direction, then wrap them around each other in the opposite direction. The tension keeps it looking clean and tight. Tie the end with an elastic.

A small spritz of shine spray afterward helps. It keeps the twists smooth and neat.

5. Half-Up Boho Braid

Half Up Boho Braid

Excellent for days when you want to keep your hair styled but wear it down. Separately braid two small pieces from the front. Secure them with an elastic or clip after bringing them to the back of your head. To make the braids appear a little softer and less flawless, gently tug on them.

I occasionally add small cuffs or clips. It gives an impression that I worked hard on the style.

6. Bubble Braid

Bubble Braid

If braiding isn’t your thing, this one’s easy. Put your hair in a ponytail and add small elastics every few inches down the length. Then gently pull each section to make it puff out a little, forming bubbles. That’s it. It’s simple but looks surprisingly put-together.

Wrap a thin strand of hair around each elastic and pin it. It hides the ties and makes everything look cleaner.

7. Crown Braid

Crown Braid

This one feels fancy but isn’t. Part your hair in the middle and braid each side. Then lift one braid over the top of your head and pin it near the opposite ear. Do the same with the other braid and tuck the ends in so they’re hidden. A bit of hairspray helps hold it in place.

Leave a few strands loose around your face and curl them slightly. It softens everything and keeps it from looking too formal.

8. Side Pull-Through Braid

Side Pull Through Braid

Pull your hair to one side and make a ponytail. Split it into two parts. Clip the top section out of the way and make another small ponytail underneath it. Then drop the first ponytail and bring it over the second. Keep repeating this pattern down your hair. It looks like a thick, layered braid but it’s just a trick of looping sections.

I usually use a bit of dry shampoo or texture powder before starting so the hair has grip.

Wrap-Up

Braids work for almost anything. You can wear them to the gym or to a wedding. They look complicated but they really aren’t. Once you know how to do a few, it’s easy to mix them up or layer them. The next time you’re tempted to throw your hair up in a bun, maybe try one of these instead. It’ll take just a few extra minutes.

Grab your brush, a few elastics, and start. You’ll figure it out as you go.
